A pregnant woman has decided to change her unborn child’s name after her mother-in-law got a tattoo of the name, despite the parents not having finalized it.
The woman, 30, and her husband, 34, were expecting their first child and had discussed a name they liked, but had not confirmed it. The mother-in-law, 57, took it upon herself to get the name permanently inked on her wrist without consulting the parents.
“We were shocked but still unsure about the name,” the woman explained in a Reddit post. “We never told anyone the name was final.”
About a month later, the couple decided on a different name for their son. The mother-in-law, upset by the change, felt it was disrespectful and began insisting they revert to the original name.
“Even my husband is asking me to reconsider ‘to keep the peace,'” the woman shared.
Seeking advice, the expectant mother turned to Reddit users, who largely supported her decision. Many pointed out that baby names are not set in stone until after birth, with some citing examples of parents changing names months later.
“Until the kid is HERE, the name is always hypothetical,” one commenter said. “She jumped the gun by getting the tattoo.”
Others offered advice, with one reader suggesting the original name could be used as the child’s middle name. However, some warned against giving in to the mother-in-law’s demands, stressing the importance of setting boundaries.
In the end, many felt the mother-in-law was at fault for her premature tattoo and that the parents were well within their rights to choose the name they preferred.
