Meghan Markle’s last name has recently become a topic of discussion after her conversation with Mindy Kaling on With Love, Meghan. Markle joked, “It’s so funny that you keep saying ‘Meghan Markle.’ You know I’m Sussex now.”
After her royal wedding, Markle and Harry were given the titles Duke and Duchess of Sussex. These titles remained after they left the royal family in 2020. However, they were banned from using “Sussex Royal” for non-royal projects.
On her Netflix show, Markle shared that she chose to share the same last name as her children, Archie and Lilibet. She explained, “You have kids and you go, ‘No, I share my name with my children.’ It means so much to go, this is our family name.”
The couple’s children have the last name Mountbatten-Windsor but became officially recognized as Sussexes after King Charles III ascended the throne in 2023.
In an interview with People, Markle said the Sussex name holds special meaning for her family. “It’s our shared name as a family. It means a lot to me.”
Royal last names often change. For instance, Harry and William used the last name “Wales” growing up, but after William’s marriage to Kate Middleton, their children began using “Wales” again in 2022.
