Colorado Springs School District Requires Parental Consent for Gender Identity Name Changes

COLORADO SPRINGS — A new policy adopted by Colorado Springs School District 11 requires parents to be notified and give consent if their child wants to change their name on school records to reflect their gender identity.

The policy aligns with HB24-1039, a state law passed last year that mandates schools use a student’s chosen name. Critics, however, argue the policy could “out” students before they are ready.

Board President Parth Melpakam emphasized the district’s responsibility to keep parents informed about their children’s education. “We have an agreement with policy AKB that we will partner with parents and not keep secrets,” Melpakam said.

Jaxon Hoskinson, an advocate from Inside Out Youth Services, expressed concerns during public comment. “The board cares more about making political statements than ensuring student safety,” he said.

Studies from the National Institutes of Health show that using a chosen name can reduce suicidal ideation by 29% and suicidal behavior by 56%.

Secretary Jason Jorgenson defended the policy, saying it was required by state law. “If we didn’t have this bill, we wouldn’t even be having this discussion,” Jorgenson said.

Julie Ott, the only dissenting board member, argued that children’s rights and dignity should be respected. “They should have a safe and affirming environment in our schools,” Ott said.
